There are four Competency Units that cover - operate light vehicle and basic 4WDing, advanced 4WDing, advanced recovery techniques. These competencies may be taken on for exploration, mining, surveying, communication and recreation industry employees and emergency services professionals and volunteers, and for recreational four wheel drivers, or as elective units of certificate and diploma courses in Metalliferous Mining and outdoor recreation industries as part of a career path qualification.

On successful attainment of the respective competencies the Registered Training Organisation (RTO) issues the trainee with a ''Statement of Attainment'. As a Nationally Recognised Competency the 'Statement of Attainment' is valid in all Australian States and Territories. Only RTO's may issue a 'Statement of Attainment'. This assures trainees and employers that the training is of high quality.

Only Nationally Recognised 4WD Training can provide employers with the assurance that the training is properly structured to meet Occupational Health and Safety requirements, and has National recognition by an Industry Training Board. Employees also can be assured that the training is transportable between employers - an important consideration when seeking to change career paths.

Recreational four wheel drivers and mine site employees can also be assured that nationally recognised 4WD training guarantees them training by professional and qualified trainers and assessors, and an auditing process that ensures continuing quality maintenance.

How is the Nationally Recognised 4WD Training flexible?

Competency Based Training (CBT) is intended to provide the maximum flexibility in method and application of training. Trainees are encouraged to actively participate in the planning and provision of training. The training can be provided in the field, at a workplace or on a training ground, or a combination of all of these. Some training, for example in snow and ice driving, may be simulated for assessment.

An important element of Nationally Recognised 4WD Training is the skills recognition process which provides the opportunity to assess the competency of the trainee ahead of training so that a training plan can be developed that suits the trainee’s or an employer’s specific requirements. Elements of competency can be trained and assessed to suit a workplace’s real needs, recognising the current competencies of individuals.

Safety and care for the environment is embedded in all the competency elements.
